About Luisa Mannering

Hi, I’m Luisa. Like many, I grew up surrounded by diet culture and, for years, I believed it was just a normal part of life. But everything changed in 1993 when I came across an article in a Sunday newspaper. It included a survey that challenged my beliefs and behaviours around food and my body. For the first time, I saw things clearly - I was struggling with an eating disorder, and it was having a profound impact on my daily life. That moment became a turning point. I knew something had to change.

My personal recovery journey, along with years of volunteering in eating disorder support groups, has given me a deep understanding of how harmful patterns and beliefs around food, weight, and body image take root. This experience has ignited a strong passion for raising awareness and helping others break free from the cycle. I can’t bear the thought of any child feeling the need to hide their body out of shame or believing they have to restrict their food to feel worthy.

I’m not a Health Professional - I’m someone who’s been there, I've walked this path and turned it around.  And I believe you can change your story, too.

I am also the founder and director of Lulu Maria Fun Spanish, a company based in Glasgow which is dedicated to making language learning fun for children.

Beyond my work, I find joy in travelling, practicing yoga and meditation, and channeling my creativity through making random arts and crafts. I’m also a coffee enthusiast and never pass up the chance to enjoy live music.

Breaking the Cycle

Breaking the Cycle is a deeply personal exploration of my experience growing up immersed in diet culture and the lasting effects it had on me. It shines a light on the powerful influence of diet culture and the beauty industry, revealing how their messages, both blatant and subtle, shape our relationships with food, our bodies, and ultimately, ourselves.

Blending personal reflection with practical guidance, Breaking the Cycle invites you to examine your own beliefs about body image and eating. You'll uncover how these beliefs took root, how they impact your daily life, and, most importantly, how to unlearn them.

If you've spent your life under constant pressure to be thinner, if food and body image have long felt like a battle, this book will resonate. Many of us carry the weight of shame and self-doubt handed down through generations. Often, unknowingly and unintentionally, we pass those same struggles onto our children.

But there is hope.

Breaking the cycle within families is possible. We have the power to shape how our children feel about food and their bodies. This book offers clear, actionable steps to help you protect your children from the toxic grip of diet culture.

Our children deserve a childhood free from guilt, shame and the relentless pressure to shrink themselves.

Breaking the Cycle is a lifeline for those ready to create change at home and nurture a legacy of body acceptance and food freedom. Join me as I share my personal journey of breaking the cycle in my family and I wholeheartedly believe that you can achieve it too! Our children do not need to inherit our body and food struggles.

This book is a wake-up call and an inspiring roadmap to a brighter future for our children.

Let the revolution begin - with you.
